Exactly ten years ago today, underwater earthquake killed more than 200,000 people in the Indian Ocean. Indonesias province of Aceh - the worst hit area -but Sri lanka was another country which bled horribly, particularly countrys tensions-ridden North and East region. International actors promised promised $ 4.5 billion that international donors had promised to then-Premier Ranil Wickramasinghe as international solidarity to rebuild war-torn Sri Lanka. As I mentioned elsewhere, the Sri Lanka government sealed the P-TOMS with the Tamil Tigers in June 2005 to distribute international aid equally to the North and East, implicitly accepting administration of aid by the Tamil Tigers. But there was resistance mainly from the South against the implementation of P-TOMS. Many thought the scale of the tidal wave that hit the island would swamp the suspicion built up over many decades among the subcultures, both at the elite and mass levels. However, the disaster did not do any good in this regard; instead it exacerbated hostilities among the subcultures, particularly between the Tamils and Sinhalese as well as Muslims , both at the elite and mass levels.
