Examine your energy bills and appliances Reviewing the last two to three years of your various energy bills will give you an indication if youve had any dips or spikes in energy consumption. If the ups and downs cant be explained by a change in weather conditions, this may indicate that its time to inspect and possibly replace your various appliances. Older appliances, such as washers and dryers, refrigerators and dishwashers, tend to use excessive amounts of energy, while newer appliances with the Energy Star label use much less. Before you make an appliance purchase, estimate the machines energy consumption with the U.S. Department of Energys formula. Or use this same estimator to determine how much energy existing appliances are using.
