Excellence in journalism is rewarded with a Pulitzer Prize. For the local daily, however, another Pulitzer will forever be on that newspapers Bucket List. Sadly, yesterday fell on the 24th anniversary of the fall of the old Tribune into the Land of Lynett, thus making this area a one-newspaper county. The publishers of that newspaper left no doubt in the past few weeks that protecting the interests of the status quo rather than the public it is supposed to serve is its legacy. However, no deed should go unrewarded. To that end, I have created an award for the Times/Tribune for its shoddy reporting and editorial misconduct in crossing the line into the long uncharted waters of Yellow Journalism. Last Friday, that rag of a publication flat out refused to run an ad from Fix Lackawanna. It took our legal staff to threaten the paper with a law suit if it did not run the ad. Our lawyers prevailed. The ad ran. For its losing efforts to keep information from its readers, I reward it with the first (and hopefully last) Pukelitzer prize. It is well deserved.
