Excellent commentary from Russ Bellant, longtime Detroiter and labor union/ community activist. (Courtesy of todays MECAWI email notice for Thursdays, Dec. 4, D-15 fast-food workers action for $15 and Full Time. Meet at Serbian Hall, 19940 Van Dyke, Detroit, south of East Eight Mile Road, 10:00 a.m.) It is critical for all Detroiters to support this strike because people who work at or near full time need an adequate income to support a family, keep a home and thus help keep stable neighborhoods. The massive foreclosures hitting our City, the steep declines in revenues to the City and our library system and peoples inability to pay water bills are all tied to jobs with adequate incomes, or lack of the same. We need to support this struggle because it means justice for the employees, and it advances incomes in our City, which benefits everyone. If you are offended by the growth of the billionaire class and the growth of poverty at the same time, you need to be at this rally and/or get others there. The super rich, after all, are getting their wealth in major part from underpaid workers, whether fast food workers, Walmart/Sams Club employees, contract employees in supplier industries, etc. We need a new reality for all workers to prosper. This event is a good place to advance that reality.
