Excellent email I copied from a friends page...everyone should copy and send to their elected representatives and every other person who is holding POLITICAL office that they can think of: Dear Sirs/Madam; I write as one of your constituents who is deeply alarmed by the recent bombing of innocent civilians in Gaza by the Israeli armys brutal crackdown against Palestinians. It is appalling and must stop immediately. I urge you to use your position to help bring an end to these atrocities. This means calling for the British Government to campaign unambiguously for a ceasefire. Given the importance of this issue and the popular mood against the brutal offensive of the Israeli army against the helpless people of Gaza, you should consider the fact that how you deal with this situation may have a bearing on your prospects of election at the General Elections in 2015. The memory of events in Gaza will stay long in the minds of the electorate, regardless of their cultural background. The international community has largely ignored international law with respect to Israels crimes. Instead the British government and other nations have rewarded Israeli aggression with financial, military and diplomatic support. I also urge you to write to the relevant authorities to demand the suspension of the trading preferences which Israel enjoys under the EU-Israel Association Agreement. Article 2 of the Agreement makes Israels trading preferences dependent on respect for human rights, a condition which UN specialists claim Israel has often breached. Palestinians are largely an unarmed and defenseless civilian population facing the force of a major military power. The human rights abuses committed by Israel in Palestinian territories are breathtaking both in their scale and brutality, yet the states which call themselves the international community are leaving them to the mercy of the Israeli Army. Israeli actions appear designed to punish the entire Palestinian civilian population, in violation of human rights and humanitarian law. These include the use of heavy weaponry in intensive strikes on densely populated civilian areas, utterly disproportionate to any perceived or real threats. These attacks are in direct violation of the fourth Geneva Convention 1949, which is legally binding on Israel. Several are classed as ‘grave breaches’-in other words, war crimes-included documented cases of murder and manslaughter, instances of intentionally causing ‘great suffering or serious injury to body or health’ and ‘extensive destruction of property not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully or unwantonly.’ Amongst the ethnic minority electorate of Muslim heritage in Britain, you and your party will be judged by your actions on this issue amid others in the forthcoming General Election in 2015. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours Sincerely (NAME OF SENDER)
