Excellent radiational cooling set ups like we have tonight with strong high pressure right overhead often result in wide variations in temperatures from the Chicago urban heat island to the typically cold spots in the suburbs, and also large hour to hour fluctuations. As a great example, at 9pm, Aurora Airport in Sugar Grove was down to -11 degrees while Midway Airport was 15 degrees, a 26 degree difference in 37 miles. Then at 10pm, Aurora Airport jumped back to -4 degrees. Outside of cold temperatures away from Chicago, light winds will keep wind chills from being an issue. But as a heads up if youll be out driving tonight, patchy ground fog may become locally dense in parts of northern Illinois, so be alert for changing visibility. Posted 10:07 PM CST 1/13
