Excerpt: Lets look at the larger picture when it comes to the relationship between capital and low-wage labor. That relationship is defined by an extreme imbalance of power. In an unregulated environment, virtually all the power rests with capital, the owner. Low-wage workers—especially in a time of high unemployment—are seen as eminently replaceable. Unless we are talking about abnormally altruistic people (and its fair to say that fast-food franchisees are not somehow more altruistic than the rest of us), human nature is such that in a highly competitive environment, many of us will look to take advantage wherever we can in order to succeed. Or, to quote Lord Acton: Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. And power follows property ownership. This is why we must create an economic democracy in which EVERY child, woman and man is empowered equally to acquire ownership in wealth-creating, income-generating productive capital with the earnings of capital. The REAL focus going forward needs to be on broadening private sector direct personal ownership of the dominant means of production––non-human wealth-creating, income-generating productive capital. The JUST Third Way (foreconomicjustice.org/?p=5797) and Capital Homesteading (cesj.org/homestead/index.htm and cesj.org/homestead/summary-cha.htm) show how to move forward with solutions to economic inequality that will work.
