Excerpt from ZONED FOR MURDER by Evelyn David - The warehouse had an open loft area that appeared to stretch across about a fourth of the back part of the building. I decided that if I stood up there next to the railing, I could get an interesting photo of the lower level, including Seans office and some of the equipment. The dusty staircase was steep and constructed of unfinished wood. Easy to tell it didnt see a lot of traffic. A compressor kicked on, the noise from the motor echoing throughout the warehouse. I snapped several photos, then took a few minutes to look around. The upper level was filled with construction materials. There were five-gallon plastic buckets of paint. One area was filled with panels of sheetrock and plywood. There were a half-dozen long metal ladders on their sides, leaning against the far wall. I saw bundles of trim boards, including some crown molding Id have loved to have in my house. I needed to get going. Gene was waiting for me and I wanted to get a comment from Maloney about the fire. Starting back towards the stairs I glanced across the warehouse floor and saw Dani and Patrick in the open doorway. Sean was walking towards them. Because of the compressor I couldnt hear what they were saying, but Dani and Sean seemed to be arguing. Pat was between them, a position hed probably taken any number of times in that volatile family. I snapped a photo of the trio. Thinking back on it later, I realized that the explosion didnt happen at the exact moment I took the photo, but at the time it seemed liked it. The warehouse floor erupted into a cloud of smoke and flames. Lumber was burning. I could smell the odor of gasoline. And worst of all, I realized that I wasnt alone in the loft.
