Excerpted from the editorial entitled: “Retiring teachers are unsung heroes” in the June 6 edition of The Monroe Evening News. Here is praise for a retiring Custer teacher. “Across the region, schools are saying goodbye to another year. This time of year is filled with graduation festivities, parties and thoughts toward the future. One group that rarely receives the recognition it deserves is retiring teachers. Monroe County has dozens of long-time teachers who will not return to the classroom in the fall. The teachers have imparted advice to students and helped to shape young minds, from preschoolers to high school seniors. While some of the teachers might be replaced with others when the new academic year begins in September, it will be difficult to fill the gaps left by their departure. Teacher Hollee Milz is one example. She will be leaving her classroom at Custer II Elementary School after 28 years in Monroe Public Schools and 32 in all as a teacher. Her passion for the students is evident in a teaching style that helps students learn to read and write through drawing. Her innovative approach is something she hopes to pass down to future generations of students and teachers as she plans to write books on the subject…. As we wish seniors well in the new opportunities opening in their lives, we should wish teachers well as they close out their careers in the classroom and open up new chapters in their lives.
