Excerpts from a blog re proposed Postal Museum: “The concept of such Postal Museum or News and Media Museum is to exhibit among others a historical collection of letters and stamps, along with a digital observatory, radio ham shack, TV studio, radio announcer’s booth and print shop that the Media Newseum can provide for educational and tourism purposes. Tibaldo clarified that the Baguio Post Office’s usual operations will still carry on. But according to Baguio Post Office’s postmaster Bernardo Kub-aron, despite seeing the benefits of the proposal, removing these small business establishments will paralyze their whole budget circulation. The postal industry’s revenue has significantly decreased over the years (due to the advent of electronic mail), which resulted to the laying off of approximately 2,500 postal employees in the country as of January this year, under the Philippine Government Rationalization Program. Additionally, the Post Office employees are receiving very little suspension from the National Government. With the limited budget, they are utilizing every space they have just to generate income. They will not be able to give everyone their due salaries had it not been for the rentals and ad posters.” My response: Thanks for getting both sides of the story but I’d like to inform the Postmaster that the case of the downturns of postal income from mails due to the advent of electronic mail is global which is also one reason why remedial measures such as the advocacy, promotions and encouragement for people to use the postal systems is considered part of the Media Museum. Income from entrance tickets to the museum can somehow or eventually add up to the revenues collected out of the mail operation which definitely will not be affected and will likewise be part of the attractions.
