Excitement In Volunteer Blood Donation The auditorium of the University of Liberia was a scene of excitement Tuesday when several students voluntarily donated blood to replenish the National Blood Bank at the J.F.K referral hospital. The three-day exercise which started with donors expressing happiness, saying the move was intended to save lives and would continue at the Catholic Hospital and the National Blood Safety Program. Some of the blood donors who spoke to the New Democrat said their action would help discourage people from selling their blood, which is a common practice in the country and encourage others to volunteer blood donation to save lives. Reflecting on the theme of the exercise, the Program Officer of the United Nations Volunteer Office at the UNDP said the drive emphasized the importance of young people to get involved in voluntarism in the country. One of the blood donors and a student of the University of Liberia, Ruth Wesley expressed happiness for donating a pound of blood. “I want to ask others to join me in this process of donating blood to save lives”, Ruth said. The Deputy Speaker of the Minor River Union Parliament, Robert K. Gboluma stated that the drive was also anticipated to raise the awareness of young people to the need to render services for peace building in order to move the country forward. “Young people should render services for peace, show concern for others and love for the country to actually move the country forward”, Amb. Gboluma said. The President of the University of Liberia Volunteer Movement (ULVM), Mr. Abraham K. Kanneh said his campus based-movement was working in collaboration with other partners to promote voluntary initiatives in the society. “We are working together with the National Blood Safety Program, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the United Nations Volunteer Program and several other partners to lunch this drive aimed at encouraging people to volunteer and to save the lives of our brothers, sisters and mothers and fathers.” –Emmanuel Ammah, UL Intern
