Exciting Opportunity!!! I have been asked to share this with all of you!! My name is Caitlin Galvin and I am the Larry Paikin Literacy Express Coordinator at the Robert Land Community Association (RLCA) on Wentworth Street North in Hamilton, Ontario. The RCLA is a non-for-profit organization to help kids off the street succeed in something productive. RLCA founder Don MacVicar, with the help of Larry, Jeff and Steve Paikin, have rallied with the North Hamilton community to raise funds and purchase a 1954 C.N. train car. The train car has been retro-fitted and converted into a library and work area and was officially inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, last month. The lights are always on inside the car, so that the community is reminded that literacy is the beacon of hope that can unlock poverty . I am contacting you today in hopes that you may have some interested teacher-candidates who would be willing to volunteer their time in teaching and instructing children who want to improve their literacy rates. Tutors can expect a great experience with some dynamic students, networking opportunities with current teachers, AND training on how both Public and Catholic boards assess, evaluate and help their students move up the literacy scale. Some interesting hooks we have coming for the kids in the Literacy Express program: SPCA read-to-rescue-dogs, Hamilton Tiger Cats appearances, and a great partnership with An Instrument For Every Child (A.I.F.E.C.). We are also seeking Music Teachers who would love to create a lesson-plan program to teach Equal Opportunity students how to play music, and discover hidden talents (brand new instruments provided of course). Tutor-training will begin this Sunday November 23rd, from 1-4pm and Sunday November 30th also 1-4pm. The Literacy Express will be open December 1st and the program will run from 4-8pm. Desirable candidates can work one 4-8 shift per week or per two weeks (or more if he or she so chooses). I would greatly welcome the opportunity to meet in person if you would appreciate a face-to-face meeting to discuss this fantastic opportunity. If you could spread the word on Brock`s Hamilton Campus that this program is looking for stellar candidates, that would be great. Here is a little bit of evidence on the popularity of this program: chch/larry-paikin-literacy-express/ thestar/news/gta/2014/10/20/train_car_converted_to_library_a_hit_in_hamilton.html cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/railcar-s-last-journey-makes-it-a-library-for-north-hamilton-1.1341747 thespec/news-story/2221661-all-aboard-the-literacy-express/ Please feel free to contact me any time.
