Exciting news from London! :) Yesterday our Beauty With a Purpose videos were judged and the finalists were called in and interviewed (see photo attached, I am second from the right). I am extremely honoured, humbled and excited to announce that I am a Beauty With a Purpose finalist! A quick thank you to Giselle LaRonde, Valene Maharaj, Daniella Walcott, my sisters at Sophia House, and the talented Ernie Ross and Ravin Ramkissoon for their invaluable help with this project. Today is a big day as well-- the Beauty With a Purpose Gala! So naturally, our Beauty With a Purpose projects (or BWP as we like to call it) have been on our minds. It was interesting to see the shift in demeanor in each girl as we shared our BWP stories with each other. As they got deeper into their stories you saw different emotions crossing their faces; almost like clouds passing over their features. Each tale was unique, with challenges and triumphs and revelations. No one could deny that it was as much a journey for them as it was for the people whose lives they had touched. Most striking of all was the intensity of their compassion. When they spoke with such deep awareness and sometimes pain, our eyes widened with theirs. You could see it flare up like the flame of a match that has just been lit. No two were exactly the same, but each girls voice took on an unmistakable conviction that rang through the air. I learned about Miss Kenya working to help children fix their cleft palette with surgeries that that actually save lives-- 1 in 10 children born with a cleft palette do not survive, often because they cannot be breast fed properly. I shuddered as I imagined myself as Miss Netherlands, spending over 12 hours in a cage without food and water as she put herself in the shoes of the many girls who had been drugged, tricked, and forced into prostitution. I painted a mental picture of Miss Jamaicas classroom, designed and created specifically for children with autism. I was struck with the care she took when describing the thought behind every last detail. I was able to tell her about our own LIFE Centre and the amazing work they are doing with autistic children and spreading autism awareness in T&T. There was nothing pageanty about these stories-- the only way that could describe these young women is as though something within them had been awakened. I was blown away by my new sisters, and enjoyed the bond we all now shared. There is nothing more fulfilling than realizing you have had a palpable and positive impact on other people. This is where you all come in. In my heart of hearts I still believe we in T&T can become a more caring, selfless people towards those less fortunate in our society. I refuse to listen to those who have given up hope as we no longer have the luxury of standing by. In honour of tonights gala where we celebrate Beauty With a Purpose, I ask the people of T&T to celebrate with me. Please see below a list of NGOs in Trinbago on Facebook. ttngonews/trinidad-tobago-ngo-nonprofit-facebook/ Just as Miss World helped us find organizations and causes that gripped us, so too can you. Find an organization on here that appeals to you and give of yourself TODAY to someone less fortunate-- not necessarily money; could be time, energy, or just a visit to someone lonely. Feel free to share this status and/or write in the comments about what you did to inspire others and give ideas-- come on Trinbago! I cant think of a better way for you to show support for your Miss World Trinidad and Tobago on her journey towards Beauty With a Purpose!
