SMZ, (trimethoprim/SulfaMethoxaZole), a commonly used antibiotic in horses, is actually a human drug converted to equine use. The preferred form of this drug for horses has not been available for some time. But we now have a new FDA approved form that combines trimethoprim and sulfadiazine into a syrup for oral use in horses.
