Executive Function. YS (14) and I are enjoying listening to Napoleon Hills Think and Grow Rich on YouTube. In the morning we go to the gym and I listen while Im sweating on the treadmill and then we head to the coffee shop where YS (14) listens over a cup of something hot. On our way home we talk about it a little. Its 9 am. Hes exercised, eaten, showered, listened to Napoleon Hill, and now hes planning his two hours of piano practice. (What hell do, how long hell do it, how hell know hes met his goal for practice today.) Later hell do the same thing for his two hours of organ practice, hell have a music theory lesson, and might proctor a younger choir. Then the remainder of algebra, a lecture on American history, a symphonic music lecture, and youth group. Executive function cant really be encouraged in the absence of personally meaningful goals. If you find that your child is not motivated, check two things: 1. Does she have goals that are meaningful to her? 2. Does she feel hopeful about meeting those goals?
