Exercise improves the brain: Physicians, psychologists and - TopicsExpress

Exercise improves the brain: Physicians, psychologists and neuroscientists agree that “exercise is the best thing you can do for your brain.” They used to think the brain had all the nerve cells (neurons) it could ever have; when neurons died, no new ones would replace them. Now research is showing that the brain does continue to make new neurons and re-adjust their connections throughout our lives. Aerobic exercise gets the process going. It does so by stimulating the circulation, which stimulates the production of a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This chemical, in turn, stimulates “the formation of new neurons in the hippocampus, the area involved in memory, learning and the ability to plan and make decisions.” According to researchers, it is never too late to start exercising to improve your brain’s health. The least amount of effective exercise time is 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Just make sure to get your heart pumping faster, produce a little sweat and a little huffing and puffing sensation by the end. Of course you should always check with your doctor first. Suggested activities include walking, strength training, dancing, racquetball, tennis, biking, jogging. I think hoeing weeds and pushing a mower would qualify as well!
