Exhausted! Mini day trip to San Diego. Stopped off at Au Coeur de Paris #2 to grab five pate so specials for the drive, but it had just opened and the case was bare. Couldnt make banh mi for me. So the pastry chef/owner gave me four banh pate so to make up for it! Apparently, two of their French pastry chefs are back home on vacation so theyve been slammed. So not only did owner #1 live in France for 14 years, and her son-in-law of #2 went to culinary school in France, but they also employ real French pastry chefs. And great customer service. No wonder theyre my new favorite Vietnamese French bakery. Made it to Donut Bar in San Diego at 10 a.m., which placed me near the end of the line but managed to snag the last Wonder Woman and a Rainbow Brite doughnut. The little girl in front of me got the last Hello Kitty. I really, really wanted the Harry Potter butterbeer doughnut too. :( No Spiderman, Batman or any other action hero doughnuts left. Had to console myself with maple bacon, chocolate bacon, maple bourbon, and cronut knock-offs. Went down to Comic Con and caught a few Frozen trolls, X-Men, and Game of Thrones rickshaws. Met up with a blog friend for Georgian, Russian, and Kyrgyzs food. Followed by cute ice cream shop that featured a flight of mini scoop cones. Took a breather and sipped cider at a pub while people watching. Then fresh sea urchin (only $7 today! because they were small), a giant scallop lollipop, oyster on the half shell, and seafood pho (better than expected, but I prefer bun rieu or bun ca for seafood soup). Dropped off half the doughnuts with the nephews, and then it was a looong drive home. Huh! I think Turkmenistan is the last Central Asian cuisine I have yet to cross off. All in all, a very good eating day.
