‘Exile Kids’ accepts further relocation (The Namibian Sun newspaper, 18 June 2012) THE Exile Kids, who were camping in the bush in the vicinity of Swapo Headquarters have agreed to move to Ndilimani, a farm that belongs to the Swapo Party Youth League at Brakwater. They were asked to vacate municipal land or they would be served an eviction order by the City of Windhoek after being evicted from the Swapo Party Headquarters area by the police. The group has been camping near the headquarters for about a month before their eviction, demanding jobs from the Government. A committee was appointed by Prime Minister Nahas Angula to attend to problems the group is facing and convince them to move. On Sunday, Senior Superintended of City Police and Emergency Management Department, Gerry Shikesho, told Namibian Sun that the place they had occupied is unhygienic and it is in contravention of the squatter proclamation ordinance, and from a safety and security aspect they could not be allowed to stay there. The group reached an agreement yesterday with the committee appointed by the Prime Minister to move to Ndilimani on “condition” that their unemployment plea is attended to within three months”. “At least by three months the camps should be clean. We should be employed,” the group’s spokesperson’ Shekupe Mutilifa’ said. Mutilifa said they wrote a letter to the Committee Chairperson, Zulu Shitongeni, a councillor from Tobias Hainyeko, and to a Committee Member of the Namibian Exile Kids Association (Neka) Secretary General Rauna Amutati, whom they had been in talks with regarding their relocation. The listed these conditions and signed to these conditions. “If this does not happen (being recruited) we will go and camp at his office (Shitongeni),” said Mutilifa. The spokesperson added that they had also asked for transport to be made available in case someone falls sick and they have to be taken to the hospital. She said transport is a need because their members who were involved in the recent car accident in a police van need to go to hospital for follow-up treatment. Shitongeni added that they had to move to a place where they have basic services such as water, electricity and toilets. Approached for comment on Exile Kids’ demand for employment, Dr Elijah Ngurare Swapo Party Youth League Secretary said, in general it is unemployment causing the children to camp, remove unemployment and you will not see people camping.
