Expect the Unexpected Deacon Edwina Hamilton Scripture: (I Kings 19:11-12 Msg) “Then He was told, “Go stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by. A hurricane wind ripped through the mountain and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn’t to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake; and after the earthquake, fire, but God wasn’t in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper.” What is this ancient passage from I Kings illustrating? “Wait Quietly in My Presence while My thoughts form silently in the depths of your being. Do not try to rush this process, because hurry keeps your heart earthbound. I am the Creator of the entire universe, yet I choose to make My humble home in your heart. It is there where you know Me most intimately; it is there where I speak to you in holy whispers. Ask My Spirit to quiet your mind so that you can hear My still, small voice within you. I am speaking to you continually: words of Life…Peace…Love. Tune your heart to receive these messages of abundant blessing. Lay your requests before Me and wait in expectation.” Elijah had been beat down. He was tired and ready to die. Life had become too much for him and he needed restoration. God ministered to his weary worn-out being. In the midst of being instructed to receive God, Elijah probably had all types of perceived notions of how His Master would show-up and show-out. Isn’t that just like God to show up in the least expected? In the slightest of ways, God answered this servant’s plea and Elijah was fortified for the rest of his journey. Anticipate the goodness of our Lord in the unexpected measures of life. In doing so, you just might be pleasantly surprised. Prayer: Heavenly Creator, thank You for this amazing example from scripture and for its powerful message. Thank You for this process of growing me, refining me and preparing me for what You have in store for my life. It’s a challenge to be patient and to wait on You sometimes, but if I can ignore the world’s messages and focus on Your timing – it will be well worth the wait. Lord, I seek Your best and want Your sovereign will. When I try to do things in my timing or through my own strength, the outcome is usually disappointing. Your ways are better than my ways and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. You see the entire timeline when I only see the step I’m on. I pray that You orchestrate and fine-tune the details. Guide me to do my part, then knock my socks off with Your response. Help me to expect the unexpected from You! I pray that my heart gets quiet enough to hear Your whispers of direction. In Jesus’ name, AMEN! Thought for the Day: Those who are awaiting answers.
