Expectations and Perceptions of Reality Our perceptions of reality can be largely influenced by our previous expectations. We tend to organize the future in our minds now, the way we see things turning out, most times - we order things in such a way that is most appeasing to us. If we believe that 3 wonderful things are going to happen to us tomorrow, we are disappointed when it is only 2; yet, had it been a total suprise to us, 2 would have made us very happy. Likewise, if we convince ourselves that only bad things will happen to us, then we are on the up and up when nothing happens at all. I used to try to convince myself that training sessions, or schools were going to be equivalent to fighting a fire breathing dragon with a wooden spoon, that way if it was anything less than murderous Id finish with - well that wasnt as bad as I thought. This kind of psychological prep happens for any given day, event, or in our interactions with other people. The key thing is: it is helpful to find a means to disassociate what we once believed in relation to what we now experience, and to not have it largely influenced by what we thought was going to happen. Many times we write off people and events because they did not live up to the hype that it previously attained - instead - why not just appreciate the moment as is, deal with the problem as it stands, and respect the individual as they are.
