Expedition to Hawaii – Day 11. Construction on the newest structure at base camp continues. Two trees have been felled to provide lumber for the porch framework, and concrete for the footings has been poured. Progress. For some R&R, we chose an establishment called Uncle Roberts. The music, while not polka, was nonetheless enjoyable, and there were various local fares available for purchase. Side note – none of the vendors had heard of the “Hot Single Dad” or “Attractive Special Education Teacher” discounts. Despite this disconcerting cultural difference, some skillful bargaining allowed us to obtain mixed grill plates. Meat. Cannibalism has been averted for a bit longer. Despite this improvement in our situation, there are problems. Discipline is becoming harder to enforce. Uniform violations, for example, are rampant. The Marines, as well as the Khaki Scouts of North America, would be appalled at our shirtless, shoeless state. I find myself uncertain how to proceed, as withholding beer or medicinal whiskey may lead to outright mutiny.
