Experience of language: A common problem of language is when we - TopicsExpress

Experience of language: A common problem of language is when we grow up learning it we often apply words to experiences, such as using a word to mean something that we assumed the sentence of a person we have heard speaking that word meant. This leads to confusion, seeming as the majority of words do not mean what we commonly use them as, which means misused words will then come to mean what they didnt. A common example is todays use of ignorant/ignorance. Ignorance is not something to be ashamed of, nor is it the fault of the ignorant that they are actually ignorant. It is the lack of knowledge about something that you simply could not and did not already know. For example, I am entirely ignorant about galaxies that we havent discovered yet. That ignorance is not a negative trait in any sense, it is the lack of a positive statement, making a neutral one. A person who is ignorant of Chinese language is not avoiding learning it, or already knows it but says they do not, they simply do not know it and have not learnt it. Ignorance today is used to describe someone who knows better but will not listen or admit to facts that are presented to them. Im not sure what the actual word for such a person would be other than willingly narrow-mindedness. Or maybe complacent. But thats besides the point, my point being that we as human beings, assign words to experience which is a problematic way of learning language and words. It is problematic because not everyone will assign the same words to the same experiences, so when speaking to many people, you could be simply confused by the other persons choice of words and vice versa.
