Experienced one of the toughest knocks of bowhunting career - TopicsExpress

Experienced one of the toughest knocks of bowhunting career yesterday.. After packing in 5 plus miles and fighting the rain the day before season i was able to locate some a large group of elk with a dozen or legal bulls. After multiple hours of playing cat and mouse with a herd bull and his cows i was able to cut them off heading back to bed. The bull presented me with a 47 yard, uphill, quartering away shot. The shot felt good and the bull took of crashing through the timber downhill from me. I heard him crash not soon after and assumed all was said and done. After giving him some time i trailed him down into the timber. After 150 yards i jumped the bull out of his bed and he took off down the mountain further. From past experience i chose to play it smart and give him another hour. It wasnt soon after the rain moved back in. With the rain washing most of the blood away and made tracking extremely difficult. I spent most of the day in the rain. trying to recover the bull but wasnt able to. Not the way i wanted to start off the season to say the least...
