The three-day conference, organized by the Kenyan government and nongovernmental organization Save the Children, will bring on board humanitarian experts and scholars from the region to explore interventions of recurring droughts, hunger and malnutrition. Effective humanitarian response can only be achieved through effective partnerships. The conference will expand networks between universities and humanitarian world to tackle Africas humanitarian crises through partnerships, said Sheila Waruhiu, the People Development Manager of Save the Childrens capacity building center. Also, officials from Kenyas drought management body and Kenya Red Cross will make presentations on harnessing local innovations to tackle environmental vagaries and famine. The looming drought in northern frontier of Kenya and Horn of Africa region could lead to a humanitarian crisis. Relief agencies have already sent funding appeal to enable them to deploy emergency food aid, water and medicine to vulnerable population. Experts reiterated that governments and non-state actors must forge partnerships to scale up investments in drought mitigation strategies. At a time of increasing needs and costs, it is critical that relief bodies work in ways that reduce and manage the risks of humanitarian crises as well as responding to their impacts, Waruhiu said.
