Explorers and adventurers from Scots and Canada, part of Education Scotland. Many people from Scotland emigrated (moved) to Canada starting in the 1700s. Three of them became famous explorers: Sir Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser, and Dr. John Rae, MD. (1) Alexander Mackenzie (Scots Gaelic: Alasdair MacCoinnich). He explored Canada from east to west. He was the first European north of Mexico to cross North America from Atlantic to Pacific. This was 10 years before Lewis and Clark. (2) Simon Fraser, who became a fur trader and explored British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies. He set up trading posts as he went, some of which become cities and towns. He also went to the Pacific. He followed a river to the site where the city of Vancouver would later be built. That river is now called the Fraser River. (3) John Rae, who found the complete Northwest Passage (this was a big deal). While working at a trading post as the doctor, he made friends with the local First Nations people. They taught him how to be a suvivorman in the frozen wilderness. Rae used his new skills to explore along the northern coast of Canada by the Arctic Ocean. Later, Rae discovered the gruesome fate of the Franklin Expedition. Going in Social Studies > History
