Exploring some more unique sounds of Ilaiyaraaja this weekend.. This is the love theme from the award winning Telugu movie Abhinandana (Dubbed as Kadhal geetham in Tamil I guess). I suspect if anyone outside of Andhra pradesh have even heard this BGM. In AP I know this music and the movie has a sort of evergreen status with the same charming Karthik of Mouna ragam and a movie based on love theme et al. (I am told that the movie didnt get any response when it was initially released but it slowly picked up thanks to Raajas music and went on to be a super hit !!) I was introduced to this piece by this gifted Keyboard Maestro from Vijayawada Hari Krishna P (Thanks mate!) AM7th/DM7th/Bm6th/E7th are the chords Ive played. This is to illustrate the usual 1, 4 , 5 Root-sub chord pattern which everyone else uses (i.e., A/D/E) and then there is this unique variation of the same thing which Raaja uses (AM7th/ DM7th/E7th). The unique sound comes from the fact that melody is often the seventh note and the chord is in a classical pattern.. If you dont know what you are doing, this will sound terribly dissonant. But not with Raaja !! Happy weekend ! youtu.be/O7Q1SKNC4c0
