Exploring the Deep Sky – Intergalactic Objects The Milky Way is actually part of something called a galactic cluster. Galactic clusters are catalogued as Abell#### or as RCG#### (Rich Cluster of Galaxies). In general, they show up as dim smudges in extremely large telescopes. Their brightest members are often galaxies catalogued under NGC, UGC, or MCG. Many astronomers also attempt to observe quasars. These are some of the oldest and most distant objects in the universe. As a result, their light has been travelling toward us since before the creation of the solar system. Quasars are exceedingly dim and appear as dim stars or smudges.
