Exploring the Expository: Engaging Students in Response to Nonfiction, for 8–12 grade teachers Monday, July 22, 2013 – Thursday, July 25, 2013 (9:00 AM–3:30 PM); 3 full semester units of credit In this four–day program, we will examine how student engagement with topical articles and media facilitates the teaching of expository analysis and response. Participants will explore a variety of ways to teach nonfiction analysis with a variety of texts (visual media, articles, websites, etc.), and to inspire impassioned student writing while differentiating instruction for reluctant writers and students of mixed–abilities. The Common Core State Standards include a significant focus on student analysis of and response to non-fiction across the curriculum. The strategies we will explore can be used in a variety of content areas to encourage deeper engagement with the reading and writing process. Participants will receive nonfiction articles appropriate for teen readers, sample assignments, and student response exemplars.
