Exposition Peter to Jesus: If you say so, I will let down the nets. Peter the Miraculous Catch…. There are many who would like to study how to be a fisherman. A person who is a learner may end up getting a PH.D in the field of how to fish. There are many who would prefer to give the details to keep their boat ready for disaster. Making sure to explain how the nets are appropriately equipped and ready to catch for the masses to eat. There are those who are ready to meet and greet their crew on the boat. They smile, greet you with a handshake, and guide you where you need to be. There are few who are equipped and do the labor of the fisherman. They use their nets in hope to catch as many fish as possible. At the end of the day they may not catch any fish! The same philosophy of a fisherman can be applied to Church of God. There those who are educated and explain the Kingdom of God. It may be concise, pleasant, and even moving with the persons knowledge and communication to perceive the Kingdom of God. There then those who are just effective in making a difference in other peoples lives. They natural can shake your hand, smile, and make a difference in your life to love through the love of Christ. There only a few laborers who consistently not just meet people where they are, but illustrate their whole hearted convictions to live for Christ. It is those few who will meet you where you are, and even though it might not be liked; share with you how life can be exciting as a practicing Christian. Simon Peter is a man of doubt. When he was on the water with Jesus he was able to walk on water. His heart, eyes, and ears were looking straight at Jesus. Yet the instant he looked down, his foot seeped down in the water and doubted he even walked on water. Calling onto Jesus, Stimon Peter was saved from drowning. Picturing Simon-Peter bold, persistent and a little frustrated because he has not caught any fish. When Simon-Peter expresses the end of his fear, Jesus instructs Simon-Peter, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for the catch” (Luke 5:4). Simon-Peter listens to Jesus and becomes less angry and frustrated, as the Old Testament becomes alive, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your path straight” (Proverbs 3: 5-6). How then, can a simple man like Jesus save a man like Simon-Peter? As odd as it may seem Jesus request trust, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything, But because you say so, I will let down the nets” Luke 5:5. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2) Bringing confusion to the fishermans mind. Simon-Peter turns away from sin and no longer questions how come this man smiles at him, Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8). Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. “Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who Have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.” (Romans 6:12-13). Simon-Peter is realizing this man Jesus is seeing thru the fishermans boldness and toughness by saying yes to Jesus. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men. So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him” Luke 5:10-11. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). What is unexpected in this story is that this man allows the fisherman to walk on water. A miracle that is unheard of turns the mans boldness into fear. The fear turns into faith. Faith turns into curiosity and the curiosity turns into a belief to follow. As Simon Peter realizes this he finds love and concern. The concern turns into discernment and then into shame. However with Gods love the fisherman is freed from his doubtfulness and he is then able to carry his rock that builds the foundation for his church. Therefore with the faithful heart all healing is possible when you are converted in wanting to grow and believe in Christ! I will leave you now with this transcript: By the Masters final words to his disciples the obligation is laid upon every Christian to be a soul-winner. Ye shall be my witnesses, is the risen Lords message to all his followers. No one is excused. Follow me, said Christ, and I will make you fishers of men. And when his face was set toward Calvary, he said to the Father, As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. By the mouth of the prophet Ezekiel, God distinctly says that, if we neglect to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. We are all sent, and if we shrink or excuse ourselves from our great mission we shall come into condemnation. J.W. Mahood. The Art of Soul-Winning (Kindle Locations 74-75).
