Extern Daily Diary: Saw my first hepatic lipidosis case today, which is a disease seen most commonly in cats. This cat has a previous history of being overweight and has recently stopped eating. On presentation, she was dull, depressed, dehydrated, & severely icteric (which is when the mucous membranes, sclera of the eyes, & the less furry part of the ears appear yellow). We ran a blood test which showed increased liver enzymes & bilirubin. We also performed radiographs which revealed an enlarged liver. These are all classic findings for hepatic lipidosis. Treatments were started immediately, including IV fluids and assisted feeding to increase calorie intake. For hepatic lipidosis it is very important to ensure cats are taking in the appropriate calories, and fluids are given to rehydrate them as well as flush out the increased bilirubin from their system. For more information on this disease our web site has a detailed page- lbah/word/liver-diseases-2/
