Extra police in parks funded by drug forfeiture May 28, 2014 By MARK MARONEY (mmaroney@sungazette), Williamsport Sun-Gazette Money obtained in Lycoming County drug forfeitures will be used to add more of a city police presence to the parks over the summer. For the fifth year, Lycoming County District Attorney Eric R. Linhardt plans to turn over $15,000 from drug cases and convictions of dealers and the like, adding a more visible police presence in the parks. Community policing has proven effective not only as a means of curbing crime in neighborhoods, but also contributes to a feeling of safety, enhances community partnerships and keeps officers in touch with whats going on in the community, Linhardt said. City Police Chief Gregory A. Foresman said funding the extra-officer presence is essential, especially at this time of the year when parks are so abundantly used. It helps up to maintain a presence and be visible when we dont necessarily have the officers to necessitate the park detail, Foresman said. Assisting in the effort will be Chief County Detective William Weber and city Lt. Brett Williams. It is important for people to know this summer that our citys parks remain a safe and enjoyable place for families and children to play, Linhardt said. I am happy to use my offices resources to fund this positive police presence.
