Extract from novel: Prior to 2016, most of the information regarding the landscape of Venus had been gathered by radar- imaging equipment, taken via a series of fly-bys. But the Russian 2016 Venera-Glob Project, had released atmospheric balloons rigged with cameras, into the Venusian atmosphere. Although both surface landers had failed, the balloon mounted cameras had successfully taken tens of thousands of images. Again, the violence that had once beset Venus was immediately apparent, and on a scale almost too great to comprehend. Unlike the structures on Mars however, which bore an uncanny resemblance to ancient Egypt, the ruins on Venus were markedly different. Taken from a distance of eighty miles above the surface, the images of unquestionably artificial structures were very similar to those inherited by the Mayan Indians, but left behind by the former civilization that once inhabited the Yucatan region of Mexico. Yet as with Mars, any further likeness to any place on Earth came to an abrupt halt. Viewed from above, the famed temple ruins of Machu Picchu for example, arise from a mountainous backdrop decorated with the greenery of life. The desecrated and sepulchral remains, of the altars and temples on Venus, rose from a backdrop ravaged by the ghoul of death. The planet itself, was swaddled by opaque clouds of sulphuric acid, many miles deep, and all below was bathed in a searing heat of diffused red, which caused the beasts and the demons, set in stone, to glow with menace. The lack of green was displeasing to the eye, and once again the viewer was left with a dullness of drained emotion that disturbed the heart, for beyond all reasonable doubt, civilization here had also come to an abrupt and violent end. The obvious question was one difficult to ask, because the answer would almost certainly be one that the asker would prefer not to hear
