Extracts taken from: Environmental Impact of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills zerowastewa.au Perth’s drinking water is taken from deeper aquifers, which are enclosed and therefore largely protected from surface contamination. However, the water within the shallow aquifer is extracted not only by the Water Corporation for scheme water, but also by householders for their gardens, by industry, by local authorities, institutions and golf courses to water lawns and gardens, and by market gardeners and horticulturists. While numerous different activities have contributed to the contamination of Perth’s ground water, a submission to the Select Committee on Recycling and Waste Management in 1995 concluded, “… past waste disposal practices have caused widespread ground water contamination in the Perth Metropolitan Region”. Large putrescible landfills and improperly run “inert” landfills still have the potential to add significantly to ground water pollution in the Perth Metropolitan Region, if leachate collection systems and liner failures occur. Relatively little is known about emissions from landfills in both the long and short term. The main concerns with LFG are odour and the contribution to global warming.
