Extremes and Lessons - Yesterday I stopped back at the Roan High - TopicsExpress

Extremes and Lessons - Yesterday I stopped back at the Roan High Knob shelter to have lunch before making my decent back down to Hughes Gap. I had been pushing hard back up to the top of Roan and when I stopped I was sweaty and the temperature up there was significantly lower. Because my body is smart, it began rapidly pulling all my warm blood back toward my vital organs. As I started to dig into my lunch my hands began to hurt. They quickly became red and tingly. I knew where this was going so I inhaled my food and started prepping to get moving again. I put my gloves back on but they were damp, and cold hands dont warm up gloves. By now they were burning and I could barely move my fingers. I tucked my trekking poles under my arm and started to jog down the trail opening and clinching my hands. I did this for about 2 miles before my hands began to warm again. After descending 1000 feet I hit Ash Gap. I was so hot I had to shed my hat, gloves, and jacket. Sufficiently warmed, I sat down and hydrated some more and had the rest of my lunch.
