Eyes LOVES this example of what can happen when citizens put their minds and efforts toward progress.......with or without the help of the BOS. Read below..... It is amazing what one homeowner has done in two months at Eagle Bay to solve her Internet need to telecommute from home. Franceen George’s vision and technical expertise led her to seek the help of a hands on expert, David Star. Then with an agreement to use the water tank and electrical power at the Eagle Bay water system, they set up a working network with 30 Mbps download and upload for the homeowners association. This system beams a signal from Stafford County across the Potomac River to King George in an impressive display of what can happen when people dedicate themselves to an objective. This has been an excellent beta test of what could be done for the whole county. There is no reason why King George Connect committee, engineers and companies in King George, and the Board of Supervisors cannot achieve the same result for the rest of the people in the county who have no service. Sen. Mark Warner and his staff person Emma Peck have already volunteered to help King George. The state of Virginia can also assist in this effort as this is a common need throughout the state. As outlined above there are several ways to get the signal to some central location and then broadcast it over the rural parts of the County. Northern neck Wi-Fi has visited both the tank at Cleydael and at Eagle Bay to assess their ability to achieve what they have already done in the Northern Neck of Virginia. They have determined that they can link a tower in Westmoreland to the Cleydael tank and then further distribute it to other antennas over King George, Metro Cast does not provide Wi-Fi, but perhaps something could be worked out such that a large capacity business connection could be tapped at their office and beamed to a nearby tank or tower and then passed on to other towers and antennas . Perhaps a more efficient way would be to take a fiber optic cable signal directly to a tower for further broadcast to the rural areas of the county. This could easily be done at a location on Route 301 near the center of population of King George called Cleydael. The 200,000 gallon per day tank at this location is only 200 yards from three major fiber optic cables on Route 301. Perhaps Verizon could route a signal to this tower. Alternatively Google wire has demonstrated 1 GB service in Kansas City, Provo Utah and other cities. Perhaps their signal is on the Level 3 fiber going between Washington and Richmond on US Route 301. Google is also looking into using blimps or balloons to lift antennas high enough to broadcast a signal over an area such as King George. Perhaps NSWC at Dahlgren might have an interest in such a concept as well. With all working together towards a common goal we should be able to make this a success in King George for service to those in rural areas. The concept is easy. Implementation will be much more difficult on a large scale.
