Eyes on the Road Moreton - November 20, 2013 This week sees the commencement of an expanded traffic report to outline details of occurrences within the whole of the Moreton Police District. Included now in statistics are events that occur in the Caboolture, Bribie Island, Woodford, Kilcoy and Moore Police Divisions. Road Fatalities As of midnight on the November 18, 2013 Queensland has recorded 247 fatality crashes for 2013, which is three less than this time last year but a further five on last week. The Southern Police Region, of which Moreton District is located, is sitting on 73, which is 22 more than last year and one more than last week. The Moreton District is currently on eight, three less than last year. Operations High visibility operations were conducted over a number of days last week. On Wednesday evening, a highway shutdown was thwarted by the weather however crews were redeployed to canvass the entire district. On Thursday and Friday night, targeted RBT operations were conducted in the Burpengary Division resulting in four drink drivers, four unlicensed drivers, 28 infringement notices and over 700 RBTs. On Sunday, all marked Police motorcycles currently deployed to the District were tasked to Redcliffe for saturation patrols. As a result, two disqualified drivers, one unlicensed driver and 32 infringements were issued. Four vehicles were immobilised due to impoundment legislation, two for seven days and two for 90 days. Traffic Crashes There were 32 crashes reported in the Moreton Police District in past week. Some of the events were exacerbated by the wet weather and there was a trend where crashes occurred due to inattention of the drivers.. Two of the crashes involved pedestrians, one of which was where a person was purposely running into the path of cars to cause a crash. The person was hospitalised as a result. What is causing our crashes? The following list outlines the causal factors of the recorded crashes throughout the week. Hit and run – x 2 (sideswipe bicycle and car park) Fail to give way x 3 Due care and attention x 9 Follow too close x 3 Disobey Red light x 1 Improper reversing x 1 Fail to keep left x 1 Medical condition x 1 Unsafe lane change x 2 Fail to keep proper control x 2 Pedestrian into path of vehicles x 2 Lost control towing caravan x 1 Unsafe U turn x 1 UIL x 1 also stolen car UIL x 1 also disqualified and due care Continuing investigations (unknown) x 1 Speed Camera Speed camera was operated on nineteen occasions in the past week in the Moreton Police District. Six of the deployments were conducted on the Bruce Highway with a high visibility vehicle with a total of 42 detections recorded. Of note was a deployment in the 60 zone on Snook Street Redcliffe where 136 detections recorded with a high speed of 86. Deployments were conducted as far afield as Mt Mee and Woodford. The camera vehicle also conducted deployments at Beachmere and Narangba Disqualified/Unlicensed Drivers The following number of disqualified and und unlicensed drivers were detected across the Moreton Police District. All of these drivers are now recorded within the impound legislation and if detected again, their vehicles are likely to be seized. Of the 44 detections made, 9 have had their plates removed for 7 days (second offence) and a further 5 have lost their plates for 90 days(third offence. There is one application for full forfeiture (fourth or subsequent offence). Drink Drivers Thirty drivers were detected in the Moreton Police District areas throughout the last week for being under the influence of liquor or a drug. Of note was the fact that five of the drivers registered over .15% and a further two were arrested for failing to supply a specimen of breath.
