Eyes up star gazers... An asteroid the length of five football - TopicsExpress

Eyes up star gazers... An asteroid the length of five football pitches is to miss Earth by just 745,000 miles - a relatively close call in space terms. Amateur astronomers are expecting to be able to view 2004 BL86 with telescopes and binoculars as the giant rock passes at about three times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. It will be visible in the UK between 1am and 6am on Tuesday or from 8pm EST on Monday to 1am EST in the US. Scientists say it is to be the closest encounter with such a large asteroid - about a third of a mile across - until 2027, when 1999 AN10 flies by.
