F V Arul Proud BillavaOne of the finest and highly respected police officers in the country, Mr. Arul was born in Yangon (Rangoon) on November 24, 1917. He had his school education in Chennai. Considered a legendary police officer by retired and serving officers, Mr. Arul did his collegiate education in Loyola College and the Madras Christian College, Tambaram. Belonging to the 1941 batch of the then Imperial Police, Mr. Arul joined as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Narasapattinam sub-division of Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh. He served as Superintendent of Police in various districts of Tamil Nadu. He was Deputy Inspector-General of Police in the then Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which comprised the Special Branch and the Crime Branch, and was considered an important unit of the police force. He was Police Commissioner of Madras for two terms, the first being from 1956 to 1959. Later, he became Inspector-General of Police. He was appointed the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation in 1968. While serving in the CBI, Mr. Arul had the rare honour of being the first Indian to become the Vice-President of Interpol. He returned to the State to take over as IG. He retired in 1976. A keen sportsman, Mr. Arul was a hockey player.
