FAA Allows use of PEDs under 10,000 Feet According to the FAA you can now use your Portable Electronic Devices under 10,000 feet. That means smaller, Handheld Approved Devices can be used in ‘airplane mode during all phases of a flight – from taxi to takeoff to landing, but ONLY on airlines that have implemented the protocols to allow such use. So far Jet Blue, US Airways and United Airlines have implemented the use of these devices on their mainline flights. Other US Carriers are currently applying for implementation, so check with your airline and follow the instructions of your flight crew before assuming this is possible on all flights and all airlines. Things to note about this new change: •Smaller devices can be used on flights within the 50 United States •Larger devices, such as full-size laptops, still must be turned off and stowed during taxi, takeoff and landing •Headsets should be used for any audible portable device as a courtesy to other passengers •This update currently only pertains to mainline flights, but the airlines are working to implement this policy on their Express carriers as soon as possible •Phone calls are still limited and can be made prior to departure, while the aircraft is parked at the gate, after landing while taxiing to the gate or as advised by your flight crew The “Friendly skies” have just become a bit friendlier!
