FAA: Every minute counts (at ATL) when controllers manage heavy traffic flows during peak departure periods. So when controllers started using new procedures June 1 that safely reduce the time separation between departing aircraft, the savings of a minute here and a minute there made an immediate difference. The savings are achieved by taking a new look at an important issue — wake turbulence. Spinning off the wings of every aircraft aloft is a swirl of air called a wake vortex. The bigger and heavier the aircraft, the stronger the turbulence. faa.gov/nextgen/snapshots/stories/?slide=34&cid=TW278
