FACEBOOK NATION : Chapter 3 page #95...THE TRUTH... I was under the Assumption that you people were not listening or paying attention to me anymore. So I went there to find out. Let me start by saying it wasnt easy to find. I took a wrong turn and ran across an older lady jogging down a side road. I was told there was nothing there only some dilapidated buildings. She said there wasnt even a sign to designate that you were there. I thought to myself here we go again. She gave me some directions that took me through some beautiful wooded areas on a gravel road. Yeah again I thought here we go again. This time I thought I was going to really get lost. I finally ended up in the town of Arlington I believe it was. I stopped and asked a young guy how to get to Blakely. My thoughts here were once there Assumption was just north of there. I didnt ask him about Assumption being I was told already that there was nothing there. Hence my friends thats where the grain elevator comes in. That would be Blakely and a nice little place with some good people. I pulled into the elevator and a young man in his twenties was directing trucks in and out. I called him over and Shadow took to him right away. I knew we were in good hands then. I told him of my little retirement pass time of finding out of the way places. This young fella didnt think I was crazy in fact he thought it was pretty interesting. He told me hed been to Assumption once or twice. He also told me not to blink or Id miss it. He also told me there was a sign out of town . That would be the one Im standing under obviously. Assumption consists of a cemetery a few old buildings and of course the antique shop you see in the other picture. And that would be Melanie standing out front striking a pose for me when I asked her for a picture. First she had to pick up her beer cans that were scattered about from the night before. Said she sat out on the steps and got a little buzz on as she does from time to time and kept an eye on the cemetery which you see in the other picture. This cemetery is directly across the road from her place. These pictures I took after being in her shop/home for about an hour trading stories from back in the day. Melanie is four years older than me but we had a lot in common. Her shop was once a bar and grill although way back in the day I think maybe they used a little different terminology. The bar itself is still there and Melanie sat behind it on a stool rolling her own cigarettes and giving me a history of the place and her life. I told her of my little hobby of going around looking for places like hers. She thought that rather interesting. She had no problem with me taking pictures of the inside of her place but being it connects to her living space I wont post those. She did tell me it was okay but out of respect for this lady I think Ill leave those out. Back in the day she smoked weed and sold it as I did. She did her share of heavy drinking too as I did. She lost her man when he was fifty six to brain cancer. I lost My Girl to breast cancer at fifty three. There were other similarities and they may come up somewhere down the road. As we talked we got to a first name basis. I told her of my Facebook story and she thought that was great and glad to be part of it. I told her of the strange welcoming I received up north and she said you wouldnt find that kind of nonsense in Assumption. I could see that right off. What a great lady and a good trip. After I took her picture she walked over to the jeep to meet Shadow and they really hit it off. I almost forgot...I bought a few items from her shop. I picked up an old money clip shaped like a wishbone and a pin in the shape of a guitar. I set them on the bar and she says what will you give me Mike. I said I dont know Melanie its your shop. She said seven bucks and I told her I thought that was awful cheap. She said she was trying to help me out here. Little did she know she already had. So we settled on ten. That pin and that wishbone money clip or going on my bike vest for good luck when me and Patricia are on the road. Another thing we had in common Melanie used to ride a Harley. I might just drop by and sit and watch her roll them cigarettes and pass the time about the old days if Im out that way again. I told her the Facebook thing might drum up some business. So if youre ever north of Blakely on hwy.25 stop at her shop and shell tell you some stories of her own. Dont blink though or youll miss it. A big thanks to the young fella at the elevator and thanks Melanie you made the trip worthwhile...THE TRUTH...
