FACEBOOK With all of these other social media apps becoming more and more sophisticated, good ol’ Facebook seems to be slowly turning into the next MySpace. It seems odd to think this, considering Facebook users are still posting and using it consistently. Looking at this common attitude from a marketing point of view, this can mean that Facebook is not an important tool to use anymore. Many people believe that Facebook has become so big that both organic and paid advertisements do not actually reach as many people as we are told. Another reason people are backing out of Facebook advertising is that they believe that users will not see any of your free content. That you must pay for advertising to work, and even then it might not bring you the results you were hoping. These arguments may sound valid, but they seem to be disregarding a key element about Facebook: Facebook is a business. It follows the same “rules” as most other businesses, one being the need to satisfy their customers. One of the main arguments against Facebook marketing is that “organic” (unpaid) advertisements are slowly reaching less and less users, forcing businesses to pay for advertisements if they are to have any hope of reaching potential customers. I have a hard time believing that the business and consumer relations executives would let this one fly. It doesn’t take a genius to know that forcing users to pay for an otherwise free service would lead to a drastic decrease in users. Taking it further, many are arguing that even paid advertisements are a scam, bringing you higher post reaches only through interaction with fake users. With Facebook as big and popular as it is today, why would they participate in a scam of this magnitude? The risk of being caught is too high, and the consequences of it would be drastic. Millions, if not trillions of upset users. It seems to me that if this really was the case, they would be deserted as quickly as MySpace or AOL Instant Messenger. Not a smart business move. As Facebook continues to grow and adapt with the ever changing online environment, it is important to keep close tabs on how your business in particular does with Facebook. Maybe, as time goes by, Facebook could participate in these kinds of business tricks, but I doubt any Facebook employee today would be bold enough to scam the most successful social network in the world into non-existence. #facebook By: Alec England, columnist, The Site Vamp thesitevamp/yes-facebook-likes-matter/
