FACETs. Forecasting A Continuum of Environmental Threats. Its only taken 40 years for the government to actually realize that its time to change our severe warning system! The antiquated way that we do it now with those encompassing polygons (that usually keeps the public guessing exactly where the threat exists) will change soon. The project in development is called FACETs a proposed next-generation severe weather watch and warning framework that is modern, flexible, and designed to communicate clear and simple hazardous weather information to serve the public. FACETs allow for 2 minute updates of the current warning with a cone. Its similar to that cone used in hurricane graphics. This kind of rolling advanced notice will allow people needing to evacuate or hide in safety to be better prepared. (Watch the video-it shows the rolling warning that is more precise compared to a polygon that includes areas that are not threatened.) Now, like any government operation, implementing FACETs will take time. 46 separate projects are needed to get the old system to the new. Nevertheless, this is still a great first step. While no timeframe has been set up just yet, this is a project that has the backing of all of the National Weather Service so that should speed this implementation along. Lets hope so.
