FACT OR FICTION? Prolonged frosts: I would like to encourage people to question, research and make an informed decision on what they hear or read regarding EAM. Not all advice is necessarily valid which in turn can make things harder for your vets. Prolonged frosts, I have heard the rumour this can make everything safe, the rumour ranges from a couple of days to several weeks hard frosts. We are nearing that time, so I would like to prompt some thoughts on this. If anyone has any actual Scientific data to back this up, please do share it, I and others would love to read it. I am not a Scientist or vet, but to me this theory makes no sense what so ever. My thoughs are, Hypoglycin A, is, today considered the toxin responsible for Atypical Myopathy, being present in the seeds of some Acer (universite de Liege Research center). Hypoglycin A is a toxin, so my first question “is a toxin alive?” No, it is not alive, in itself is it completely inanimate, but is produced by a living thing (example-Sycamores) “If it is not alive, can it be killed?”, there is nothing alive to kill. For this reason, I personally do not trust or believe the frost rumour, my final question to myself “Would I feed my horses frozen ragwort?” No, definitely not! I suspect the rumour stems from the old (no longer followed by Scientists) theory of a bacteria called clostridium sordellii being (historically) associated with EAM. As already stated, these are my thoughts only, I encourage everyone to question information you read, please don’t just accept it as truth because someone has taken the time to write it down.
