FACT SNACK - In 1902, Philadelphia residents were able to purchase take-out (or take-away, as they called it) food from coin-operated machines. These machines were set up at a cafe known as Horn & Hardart’s Automat. Ten years later, a similar cafe opened in New York. Sandwiches and other take-away foods were actually made fresh by a kitchen crew, portioned in special trays and stored in the machine from the back. The front consisted in a multitude of individual glass doors revealing well-organized contents with a section for sandwiches, one for desserts and so on. This means of securing a meal became very popular in the 1920s and 30s during the Great Depression. The food was affordable and ready to eat, and it got people out of the house.
