FACT!!! Tuesday’s MTN8 semifinal will be the 150th meeting between Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the near 44-year history between the pair. The second leg clash at the Orlando Stadium sees The Buccaneers leading 1-0 from the reverse fixture late last month and will be the latest chapter in a rich history between South Africa’s two most popular sides. It is perhaps fitting that the match will be played at the Orlando venue, which used to be the home of the Derby before the much larger FNB Stadium took over in the 1980s. Chiefs have held the upper hand in the past 149 meetings, winning 64 of those and scoring exactly 200 goals in the process. Pirates have won 36, or a little under 25 percent, of the matches, and have netted 160 times. There have been 44 drawn games and five matches that were abandoned for various reasons, including the most tragic encounter between the sides, the 2001 meeting at Ellis Park in which 43 fans lost their lives. The first ever Soweto Derby was held on 24 January, 1970 after both clubs had been beaten in the semifinals of the eight-team R1000 Rogue Beer Cup, and had to play off for third place at the Orlando Stadium.
