FACT: the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed with 80 percent support from Congressional Republicans and just 61 percent from Congressional Democrats. FACT: In the Senate it was filibustered by 18 Senators. One was a Republican, the other 17 were Democrats. FACT: The best-known and most die-hard opponent of ending segregation was Bull Connor, who chained himself to the schoolhouse doors in an attempt to stop blacks from entering. He was a Democrat, as were the overwhelming majority of public officials who fought to preserve segregation. FACT: The 19th Amendment, granting universal suffrage to women, was written by a Republican Senator and passed by the 66th Congress, which was controlled by Republicans. FACT: The first black Member of Congress, the first black state Governor, the first woman Member of Congress, the first Hispanic Senator, and the first Asian-American Senator were ALL Republicans, and the first female Supreme Court Justice was appointed by a Republican. The Democratic Party, which is home these days to just about everyone who calls themselves a liberal, has been on the wrong side of history with remarkable consistency. The speech above is a transparent attempt to cash in on the good reputation of the word, liberal, after decades of degrading and perverting its meaning.
