FAITH BOOK Common themes and similarities, as well as my viewpoint on the application of the Word. Now applying my Passing Thoughts of Faith… 1 Samuel 16-20 JUDGE (Jesus Understands, Decides, Guides and Elevates) 1Sam 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t make decisions the way you do! People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions.” PRIDE (Essentials = Discipline, Intuition, Recognition, Prayer) 1Sam 17:28, 34-37 But when David’s oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking to the men, he was angry… “I know about your pride and dishonesty. You just want to see the battle!” … But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and take the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who saved me from the claws of the lion and the bear will save me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!” [David had what it took. His brother misread his gift, and had it all backwards. ;-)] FREE (Facts, RISK, Excellence, Empathy) 1Sam 17:39-40 David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested. “I’m not used to them.” So he took them off again. He picked up five sooth stones from a stream and put them in his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across to fight Goliath. [RISK (Recognition Is Success’ Key) suggests that to truly be free we must understand who we are. When we do, we find how little it takes on our part to do the Lord’s will… it’s often just a stone’s throw away.] WORDS (What Others Remember & Digest Strengthen Spirits) 1Sam 18:8-9, 29 This made Saul very angry. “What’s this?” he said. “They credit David with ten thousands and me with only thousands. Next they’ll be making him their king!” So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David… he became even more afraid of him, and he remained David’s enemy for the rest of his life. [Saul prophesied it himself (“Next they’ll be making him their king!”). Words are powerful. Likewise, I have experienced this interpretation of jealousy in my personal life.] 1Sam 20:14-15 “And may you treat me with the faithful love of the Lord as long as I live. But if I die, treat my family with this faithful love, even when the Lord destroys all your enemies.” [Keeping your word is also powerful. David would remember to show this faith to Jonathan’s son when Saul (the enemy) and Jonathan are dead. Have you kept your word to someone who is “living?”] [Thus…] PEACE (Placing Eternity Above Chaos & Evil) 1Sam 20:42 At last Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have made a pact in the Lord’s name. We have entrusted each other and each other’s children into the Lord’s hands forever.” [One of the categories I’ve used in my reading challenges scripture, and would be things I’d ask perhaps in Bible Study to get a better understanding (sometimes highlighting the fact that the writing is as imperfect as are the writers).] THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMM 1Sam 17:25, 18:17 “And have you heard about the huge reward the king has offered to anyone who kills him? The king will give him one of his daughters for a wife, and his whole family will be exempted from paying taxes!” … One day Saul said to David, “I am ready to give you my older daughter, Merab, as your wife. But first you must prove yourself to be a real warrior by fighting the Lord’s battles.” [Campaign promise gone forgotten?] 1Sam 17:55-58 As Saul watched David go out to fight Goliath, he asked Abner, the general of his army, “Abner, whose son is he?” “I really don’t know,” Abner said. “Well, find out!” the king told him. After David had killed Goliath, Abner brought him to Saul with the Philistine’s head still in his hand. “Tell me about your father, my boy,” Saul said. And David replied, “His name is Jesse, and we live in Bethlehem.” [It was just 1Sam 16:22 that Saul met David and appointed him to play the harp (Then Saul sent word to Jesse asking, “Please let David join my staff, for I am very pleased with him.”). Did he and Abner both have Alzheimer’s? LOL]
