FAITH, FAMILY, SCHOOL, SOCCER As the outgoing Kickers Club - TopicsExpress

FAITH, FAMILY, SCHOOL, SOCCER As the outgoing Kickers Club President, I am pleased to hand over reigns to Tim Moats who is the incoming President. Tim sent the following inspirational message to the Varsity team yesterday. I wanted to share his message with the entire club so you can see what a great leader you will have for the 2014 soccer season! --Karyn Hendricks Hello everyone! Well, the sun did come up this morning (we just havent seen a whole lot of it, but hey, at least no snow today!). Like all of you, I was bitterly disappointed with the outcome of yesterdays game, NOT with the effort that the boys gave, because they gave it their all, but I was disappointed with the end result. Lets call it what it was: it was a great soccer game! In the regular season, it would have been another tie, but in the tournament, there had to be a winner and there had to be a loser, and unfortunately we were on the losing end, but NEVER would I fault the effort that the boys gave. As I was wallowing in my sorrow this morning, I happened to recount the priorities that Coach Sprunger mentions each April at the meeting for all boys (including the incoming freshman) interested in playing soccer at Worthington Kilbourne. He has the returning players say them first: 1. Faith, 2. Family, 3. School, and 4. Soccer. This is the order of importance that he gives to these areas of his life, and he wants to instill this in each of his players. He teaches this by his example. These priorities happen to align with my values as well, so if you would indulge me (once again), here I go. My faith tells me to be thankful, and I am thankful for each one of these young men and the coaches. What an extraordinary group which have made sacrifices for the benefit of the team which achieved so much this season. I am thankful that no one sustained any serious injury during the course of 18 games! I am thankful for each one of the families that have shared their sons for this journey. It has been a lot of fun spending time with each of you this season! This may sound trite, but I feel we all are one big family. Seniors and families of seniors: I am not even allowing myself to think about next year without each of you there! Although we will have new family members join us, a big part of our family will be missing. What a great school we have in Worthington Kilbourne, where our sons can learn and be prepared for their futures! From the teachers and staff to the physical plant itself, we are blessed with a fine institution for teaching and learning. I am so glad Coach Sprunger doesnt put soccer ahead of school work. The boys are, afterall, student athletes. When I first looked at the seedings of the teams in our Region, the thing that struck me most was how evenly matched the top 18 or 19 soccer teams were. A run in any tournament takes not only skill and talent, certainly, but also a degree of luck. The bounce of the ball in one direction or another; someone being at the right place at the right time, etc. I am not trying to make excuses, but that ball bounces another direction earlier in the game, and we end up winning. Its that fine of a margin. I feel the most pain for the seniors and their anguish and tears (I remember that at Delaware Hayes last season, too). As Darin Grimm (Carters brother) said after the game last night, the only way that the season doesnt end with a loss (and the feelings associated with that loss, I might add) is to win the state championship (and only one team will do that). Finally, I am thankful that we have a Head Coach that instills these values in our boys (I dont know if you could say that for many coaches in Central Ohio). Coaches Masterson and Tourville are products of Coach Sprungers teaching and also display these values to our boys by their example. Coaches, thank you for the counless hours you have devoted to teaching our sons this season! This game is about more than winning and losing. Sure, it feels better to win, but much can be learned from a loss. Coaches, players and families, thank you! It was a fun ride!! Lets not hang our heads. We have much to be proud of this season! Lets celebrate instead! See you at the banquet on November 10. Sincerely, Tim Moats
