FALL 2013 September 24, 11 a.m. Quint Newcomer Quint is a faculty member at UGA and Director of UGA Costa Rica. His expertise is in economic opportunity in tropical rainforest ecology. We are going to do this in conjunction with an art exhibit related to the EGSC Costa Rica trip this past spring. October 1, 11 a.m. GSU Wind Ensemble Robert Dunham conducting October 17, 11 a.m. Billy Mills 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist in 10,000 meter run. Mills, a Native American (Lakota), has an inspirational story of how he trained to meet his goal and how those techniques can work for others. November 5, 11 a.m. Trey Bruce Nashville music producer, songwriter, and performer. Winner of 13 ASCAP Awards, an Emmy Award, five #1 singles, multiple top 5 and 10 hits and an Academy of country Music Song of the Year nomination. November 14, 7 p.m. Annie Moses Band Dynamic Julliard-trained musical family who will provide an evening of wonderful entertainment. SPRING 2014 February 4, 11 a.m. Roy Blount, Jr. Southern writer and humorist March 4, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Symphony Orchestra Augusta April 19, 2 p.m. Lion King Fox Theatre (on a Saturday) April 15, 11 a.m. Celtic Duo Two young musicians who play acoustic music inspired by the Celtic tradition. QUINT NEWCOMER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes, 2010 Worked as own general contractor and built first LEED-certified home in Athens, Georgia, the 7th to attain Platinum certification in the state of Georgia. Director and Resident Scientist, University of Georgia Campus and Programs in Costa Rica, Athens, GA and San Luis de Monteverde, Costa Rica. September 2005 – Current • Oversee UGA satellite campus in Costa Rica (36 staff members, 18 annual internship positions), UGA Costa Rica’s Athens office (3 staff, graduate student worker, 4+ interns, and 4+ student workers). Includes annual budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting; personnel management; operations including facilities construction and maintenance, programming, research, policies and procedures, marketing, fundraising, and public service and outreach programming. • Oversee program development, budgeting and program administration for 25 annual study abroad programs in Costa Rica plus seminars, symposia, and workshops. • Co-PI for multiple grant proposals to National Science Foundation and other agencies for facilities improvement, collaborative research proposals, and IGERT. • Member of multiple UGA administrative committees and advisory boards, including Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute, UGA Latino Advisory Board, and UGA Office of Sustainability Green Office Champions. Represent UGA on Georgia Campus Sustainability Network Advisory Board. • Created and oversee UGA Costa Rica Carbon Program as carbon offset mechanism for all UGA Costa Rica study abroad programs. Students participate in reforestation within Monteverde’s Pájaro Campana Biological Corridor, establishing long-term research plots. Initiated Geographic Information System (GIS) Lab at UGACR campus to support Corridor research and monitor reforestation program over time. Directly supervise annual student interns in preparation of annual UGA Costa Rica Campus Sustainability Report. Oversee UGA Costa Rica’s certification by Costa Rica’s Certified Sustainable Tourism program. • Community outreach activities included securing Rotary funding for a bridge and latrine project in San Luis completed in 2007. Collaboration with Warnell School faculty to develop an International Service-Learning Protocol and train faculty to incorporate service-learning into their courses and programs in Costa Rica. Adjunct Faculty, Odum School of Ecology, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA. September 2008 – Current • Core faculty member, UGA Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute. • Regular Guest Lecturer for Ecology, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Housing and Consumer Economics, Foundation Fellows, and other UGA courses. Teach annual undergraduate course, Culture & Ecology of Costa Rica, and biennial graduate course, Watershed Services: A Case Study of Costa Rica, both of which have field components in Costa Rica. Teaching Fellow, F&ES 763b Emerging Markets for Ecosystem Services, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, New Haven, CT. Spring ‘03, Spring ‘05 • An interdisciplinary, capstone course for master’s and doctoral students, this seminar reviews the scientific theories for measuring carbon sequestration capacity, provision of hydrological services, and biodiversity, and examines the opportunities (and limitations) of ecosystem services markets by comparing the experiments underway with existing scientific, commercial and policy knowledge. • The Spring 2005 course includes a field-trip to Panama designed to help refine and test an integrated analytical framework for strategic resource management decision-making, and to identify opportunities for policy to create and/or enhance existing market opportunities. Instructor, F&ES 846b Strategies for Land Conservation, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, New Haven, CT. Spring ‘02 • Co-developed and co-taught this course with Professor Brad Gentry. This seminar for second-year master’s students reviews terms, strategies, techniques, and organizational approaches to the identification, acquisition, and management of land for conservation and sustainable use. Teaching Assistant, F&ES 746b Seminar on Society and Natural Resources: Sustainability and Biodiversity, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, New Haven, CT. Spring ‘02 Consultant, Consultoría para Organizaciones Sostenibles, S.A. (CaOS), San José, Costa Rica. 10/99 – Current • Offer specialized presentations and workshops on forest certification and sustainability frameworks, with practical applications for government agencies, NGOs, business, and university groups. • Completed Rainforest Alliance training for SmartWood certification auditors, April 2003.
